The district of Altenkirchen forms the transition between the Siegerland and the Westerwald. Almost 130,000 inhabitants live here in 119 municipalities. The largest towns are Betzdorf, Kirchen an der Sieg, Wissen, Herdorf and the town of Altenkirchen.
As the northernmost district in Rhineland-Palatinate, the area borders directly on North Rhine-Westphalia. There are six other districts in the immediate vicinity: The Rhein-Sieg district, the Oberberg district, the Olpe district, Siegen-Wittgenstein, the Westerwald district and the Neuwied district.
