The city of Bern is located on the Swiss Plateau and is the federal city of Switzerland. With over 134,000 inhabitants, Bern ranks as the fifth largest city in the country after Zurich, Geneva, Basel and Lausanne. In total, more than 422,000 people live in the canton of Bern, which is made up of 70 municipalities.
The urban area is divided into six districts: Innere Stadt, Länggasse-Felsenau, Mattenhof-Weissenbühl, Kirchenfeld-Schosshalde, Breitenrain-Lorraine and Bümpliz-Oberbottigen.
The municipalities of Bremgarten bei Bern, Kirchlindach, Wohlen bei Bern, Zollikofen, Ittigen, Muri bei Bern, Ostermundigen, Köniz, Frauenkappelen, Mühleberg and Neuenegg are located in the immediate vicinity of the city.
