Types of stretch ceilings – Reduce sound with acoustic stretch ceilings

Interior design has a major influence on the atmosphere, the design and the emotions that are evoked in the rooms. The design of the ceiling, the walls and the lighting play a key role in this. With the various types of stretch ceilings, you can conjure up a positive atmosphere in your rooms in no time at all.

What is a stretch ceiling?

In addition to wall design, renovating the ceiling is one of the measures required to give rooms an ideal makeover. Ceilings can be painted over to remove slight discoloration, but as soon as cracks appear, the problem can no longer be solved by simply painting. For such cases and for suspending the ceiling to provide indirect lighting, there are various types of stretch ceilings.

A stretch ceiling is a “ceiling under the ceiling” system that can be used to cover cracked ceilings and hide pipes and cables. The stretch ceiling system is mounted on the original ceiling using aluminum strips. The new ceiling can be attached to the profiles by heating the stretch ceiling film.

Stretch ceiling types - from matt to high-glossDifferent stretch ceiling types

Stretch film ceilings are available in matt, semi-gloss and high-gloss as so-called lacquer stretch ceilings. They are available as printed stretch ceilings, luminous ceilings, 3D or multi-level ceiling systems.

Fabric stretch ceilings, also known as textile stretch ceilings, are available in matt or silk matt. These are available as printed fabric stretch ceilings or as light fabric stretch ceilings.

Among the stretch ceiling types, stretch lacquer ceilings are the most popular system when it comes to room design. The range of colors available for stretch ceilings is huge. This means they can be easily adapted to your interior style. As a rule, stretch lacquer ceilings have a high degree of reflection of over 95%, creating a mirror effect that impresses many customers.

This effect makes the room appear elegant on the one hand and visually larger on the other. This is why stretch lacquered ceilings are not only particularly suitable for small rooms, but also for narrow corridors. They are extremely popular in bathrooms and kitchens.

Due to their elegance, stretch lacquered ceilings are of course also suitable for large living rooms and all other rooms in the private and commercial sector.

Exciting designs, spatial motifs or simply a beautiful pattern – printed stretch ceilings offer a completely new field for designing your own four walls. Whereas in the past you were limited to hanging pictures or sticking on large stickers, ceiling films can now be printed with any design. The result is not only of a particularly high quality, but also more durable than any stick-on motif.

Fabric stretch ceiling

Fabric stretch ceilings are usually used to design the room with a suspended ceiling, to reduce noise in the room and to create special lighting effects in conjunction with backlighting.

With a stretch textile ceiling, you can give your home, office or commercial premises a special ambience. They are available in different colors and variations.

As fabric stretch ceilings have special acoustic and visual properties, they are often used in home cinemas. On the one hand, they reduce reflected sound and thus help to ensure unadulterated listening pleasure. On the other hand, the matt and silk-matt fabric surfaces produce less scattered light, which has a positive effect on the image quality of projectors.

In addition to its aesthetic benefits, the fabric stretch ceiling scores points for its durability and ease of care. It creates a pleasant atmosphere in the room. This can be further emphasized with indirect lighting.

In addition to the sound-reducing properties of textile ceilings just described, there are other ways to positively influence room acoustics. On the one hand, ceiling foils with micro-perforations offer a stronger sound-absorbing effect. The holes, which are barely perceptible to the eye, guide some of the sound into the space between the ceiling layers, preventing it from spreading through the room as reverberation.

To provide additional sound insulation in particularly large and unfurnished rooms, additional sound-absorbing elements can be fitted between the acoustic stretch ceiling and the original ceiling. This is particularly helpful in open-plan offices where the ceiling height does not allow for protruding, lower-hanging soundproofing elements. It also preserves the even look of the ceiling.

Features & advantages of stretch ceilings

Compared to classic ceiling coverings, the various types of stretch ceilings offer various advantages:

  • Easy cleaning

Which lamps can be integrated into stretch ceilings? Stretch ceiling lighting

Lighting gives a room a certain atmosphere. This contributes significantly to our well-being. The lighting should therefore be selected according to the use of the room. You can choose from conventional ceiling lamps, chandeliers, halogen and LED spotlights, LED flexbands, Swarovski spotlights, indirect lighting and backlighting.

The lighting systems mentioned are quickly and easily integrated by a specialist. Each lighting system requires its own procedure. The cables for the lamps can be installed in the space between the ceiling and the stretch ceiling.

Mounting the lighting

Before the lighting is installed, the cables must be laid. It is important to note that the correct operating voltage must be available depending on the type of lighting – usually 230V or 12V. Of course, dimmers can also be integrated.

With luminous ceilings, it is particularly important that the cables are laid inconspicuously. With a normal, opaque stretch ceiling, the power cables are no longer visible once the ceiling has been installed.

You can start installing the lighting about 30 minutes after installing the ceiling foil. To do this, first mark the points where the lamps and spotlights are to be installed. A reinforcement ring is then glued to the film at these points. The stretch ceiling is then cut open at the inner edge of the ring in order to connect the lamp holder to the circuit and install it.

LED flexbands for indirect lighting

LED flex strips are often used for indirect lighting. They are available for dry and wet rooms and are usually installed in the mounting strips for the stretch ceiling. When planning the ceiling, it is therefore important to ensure that the appropriate profile strips are used. This design means that the individual LEDs are not visible; instead, the light appears as a uniformly bright strip along the contours of the room. It goes without saying that the correct ceiling foil must also be used.

Alternatively, LED flex strips can also be installed below the ceiling for indirect lighting, whereby a light matt or semi-gloss foil should be selected so that the individual LEDs are not too conspicuous (unless this impression is desired). The strips themselves can be concealed using a two-level suspended ceiling, for example, as shown in the picture on the left.

LED flex strips are available in cool and warm white light colors as well as RGB strips with color changers. LED flexbands are often used to illuminate corridors and stairwells, but they also provide atmospheric lighting in living rooms and bedrooms.

Swarovski Light Beam

The crystals of the Swarovski spotlights sparkle on the ceiling like stars in the sky. Swarovski lights can be used to create a very special atmosphere, especially when installing glossy stretch lacquered ceilings and in large rooms. The room shines in a festive glow that you simply have to see to believe.

Illuminated ceiling with backlighting

With a light stretch ceiling, the lighting is installed between the original ceiling and the new stretch ceiling. One example of this is the previously presented lighting with LED flexbands, but there are also options for illuminating the entire ceiling. For this purpose, light strips or LED floodlights can be installed as backlighting on the old ceiling before the new ceiling system is installed.

Due to the distance between the film and the light sources, the light appears diffused and uniform. This effect is enhanced by the translucent film, which is approx. 70% translucent. The indirect lighting makes the room appear elegant and sophisticated.

A special “wow” effect can be achieved with printed luminous ceilings. Interesting designs and entire works of art can be impressively illuminated from behind. How about a radiant sky with sunshine, even though it’s actually raining? With the illuminated ceiling, it’s always summer in your home.
