Rhineland-Palatinate is located in the west of the Federal Republic of Germany. With an area of 19,853 km², the federal state borders North Rhine-Westphalia to the north, Hesse and Baden-Württemberg to the east and France and Saarland to the south. In the west, the state borders Luxembourg and Belgium with a population of around 4.1 million.
The low mountain range and the Rhine characterize the landscape, almost 40% of which is covered with forest. The Rhenish Slate Mountains lie to the north. It is subdivided by the rivers Rhine, Moselle, Lahn and middle Sieg. The Eifel, most of which belongs to Rhineland-Palatinate, the Moselle Valley, the Hunsrück and the Middle Rhine Valley lie to the left of the Rhine. The uplands of the middle Sieg, the Westerwald, the lower Lahn valley and the western Hintertaunus lie on the right bank of the Rhine. Rhineland-Palatinate is the state with the largest area on the left bank of the Rhine. In the south, the state comprises the Mainz Basin, the Rheinhessen Hills, the North Palatinate Uplands, the West Palatinate Moor Lowlands, the West Rhine Uplands, the Palatinate Forest and part of the Upper Rhine Plain.
