The federal state borders Lower Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt to the north and Saxony to the east. It borders Bavaria to the south and Hesse to the west.
In terms of landscape, Thuringia is part of the German low mountain range. The Harz Mountains are located in the far north. To the south-east is the western part of the Goldene Aue. A small area in the north-east belongs to the Leipzig lowland bay. In the heart of the state lies the Thuringian Basin, which extends from here towards the north-west. To the south are the Thuringian Forest and the neighbouring Thuringian Slate Mountains to the south-east.
