Stone carpet terrace

In summer, the patio is an outdoor paradise for many people. They spend every free minute in their green living room. Having breakfast outside in the morning, relaxing at lunchtime, drinking coffee in the afternoon and hosting friends for a barbecue in the evening. This is the perfect way to enjoy summer at home. And it’s even better on a stone-carpeted patio.

Good reasons for a stone-carpeted patio You can recognize by these signs that you should renovate your patio

Sign 1: Cracks in the current decking

Probably the most obvious reason for renovating a patio is cracked, uneven flooring. Chipped stone tiles or cracked cast floors not only look shabby, they also pose a danger. Anyone who has ever got stuck on a stone edge while walking barefoot knows exactly what is meant. Tipping chairs and tables are also a disruptive factor when relaxing in the garden.

A well-laid gravel floor forms an even surface without any obstructive edges, making these problems a thing of the past.

Sign 2: Damage to the substrate

Far less obvious is damage to the substrate underneath the decking. Old and improperly applied primers can pose a risk to the building structure, especially on patios directly next to the house or on roof terraces. It is therefore important to consult a specialist company at the first sign of damaged waterproofing.

As waterproofing is an essential part of the gravel coating in outdoor areas, the laying professional pays particular attention to professional laying.

Sign 3: Look and feel good

The visual impression is also an important aspect when deciding when the patio should be renovated. You can only relax properly in a place where you feel comfortable and enjoy spending time. Accordingly, the amount of maintenance required should be low so that you have more time to relax.

As a gravel base remains free of weeds and is easy to clean, these conditions are met.

Advantages of a stone-carpeted terrace compared to a tiled surface

The problem with tiles as decking is as follows:

There is always a risk that they can become infiltrated with moisture. If the water gets into the cavities under the tiles and the temperature then drops below freezing, the water under the tiles will freeze. As the volume of ice is greater than that of water, the tiles are broken up. The result is cracked joints and loose tiles.

With stone carpet, the water flows through the open-pored stone structure and is drained away via the seal. The answer to the question of whether a stone carpet is waterproof in outdoor areas is therefore clear: No, it must actually be permeable to water! Permeability is one of the major advantages of gravel flooring. It prevents the floor covering from being pushed up and damaged by freezing water. Professional waterproofing is therefore particularly important for stone-carpeted terraces and outdoor areas in general.

Stone-carpeted terraces have proven their worth Combining aesthetics and robustness outdoors

Stone carpet decking has proven to be an extremely popular option. Their popularity is based on the combination of impressive aesthetics and remarkable functionality. The stone carpet gives the patio a natural, organic look and creates an inviting outdoor atmosphere. At the same time, it is characterized by remarkable durability. The mixture of special binders and high-quality pebbles results in a surface that not only looks attractive, but is also strong and resilient enough to withstand the many demands of outdoor use.

Outdoor flooring is exposed to temperatures between -20°C and +40°C, depending on the season. Accordingly, a certain degree of elasticity is important so that the material can expand and contract permanently without cracking. From extreme heat in summer to frosty temperatures in winter – the stone carpet retains its integrity and aesthetic appeal.

In addition, it offers slip resistance, minimizes water retention and requires little maintenance. The binder used makes the gravel floor 100% frost-resistant.

This proven combination of beauty and functionality makes the stone carpet a convincing choice for terraces of all kinds.

Qubo®Tec can also be used to lay layers several centimeters high in a single operation, for example to achieve the construction heights of surrounding materials.

A pool surround made of marble or quartz gravel can be easily matched to a stone-carpeted patio. The use of
Qubo®Tec also makes it possible to match the look of the courtyard and driveway. Both systems are ideal for use around pools and as garden paths, enabling a consistent design around the house.

As a pool surround, the water permeability of the gravel base has a positive effect in two ways: Firstly, rainwater is drained away directly. Secondly, it prevents the formation of puddles when water spills over the edge of the pool.

Qubo® Painting - unique motifs for your stone-carpeted patio Geckos, plants and more make your stone-carpeted patio one of a kind

The freedom of design is a unique selling point of stone carpeting. This not only applies to the many hundreds of colors in which marble and quartz gravel are available. The use of Qubo® Paintings also makes your stone carpet terrace something unique. The sz art of airbrush manufactory creates airbrush works of art on quartz gravel according to customer requirements. The logos, motifs, lettering and much more created in this way are provided with a special sealant. This makes the motifs abrasion-resistant and protects them from the effects of UV radiation. Qubo® Paintings are therefore also ideal for use on stone carpets.

Each work of art is created by hand and delivered ready to lay. The specialist inserts the desired motif directly into the floor during installation, creating a continuous surface without transitions.

Non-binding cost estimate and advice

Can stone carpets be used to coat terraces?
Definitely, yes! A stone carpet patio is the durable alternative to other floor coverings. The system creates a non-slip floor that is not only visually appealing, but also 100% frost-proof and UV-resistant. This means that our
Qubo® quartz gravel can be used outdoors without any problems. Their special coating gives the quartz pebbles additional protection from the sun’s rays.
Our marble gravel, which is also suitable for outdoor use, comes from Italian quarries and is naturally lightfast.
What are the advantages of a stone-carpeted patio?
  • High drainage capacity due to open-pored structure

  • Quick drying in sun and wind

  • Easy to clean and self-cleaning

  • 100% frostsicher

  • UV-stabil

  • Gentle, massage-like walking comfort when walking barefoot
How much does a stone carpet terrace cost?

When laying a stone carpet, it is primarily the area of application that determines the pricing.

The costs also depend on many other factors, including

  • the type of binder required
  • from the primer

  • the choice of skirting boards, for example, if these are also made of gravel

  • from the labor costs of the professional installer

  • the size of the area to be laid

In outdoor areas, for example with a stone carpet terrace, higher costs are incurred as the substrate must be sealed and the marble or quartz gravel laid with a UV-resistant binder.

What grain sizes are available?

Colored quartz is available in the following grain sizes:

  • 1–2 mm

  • 2–3 mm

  • 3–4 mm

Marble gravel is available in the following grain sizes:

  • 1–4 mm

  • 4–8 mm

  • 8–15 mm

Typically, a quartz grain size of 2 – 3 mm or a marble gravel grain size of 1 – 4 mm is selected. However, larger gravel grain sizes are also conceivable, especially for stone carpets.

Of course, the choice of gravel grain size has an effect on the laying thickness of the gravel floor.

What material thickness is used to lay stone carpet on terraces?

An installation thickness of 8 mm is used outdoors.

10 mm of material is applied to external stairs.

Vertical surfaces such as risers, skirting boards and walls are laid in 6 mm.

All specifications refer to normal quartz gravel with a grain size of 2 – 3 mm. The layer thickness also increases with coarser gravel.

How does the grain size affect the costs?

The larger the grain size of the gravel, the higher the installation height of the floor covering. This means that more gravel and additional binder is required per m². The price increases accordingly.

Why is a primer required for stone carpets?

The primer forms the bonding bridge between the building structure and the gravel floor. The material can be applied to almost any substrate, for example tiles, wood, stone, concrete and metal. Different substrates require different preparation steps.

On tiles and metal, for example, a primer is required to give the smooth surface stability during installation.

On porous stone and absorbent screed, the appropriate primer must be used to prevent the binder from being absorbed, which is intended to ensure that the pebbles remain in place.

To coat wooden planks with a gravel floor, the movement of the planks against each other must first be stopped. To do this, the installer first applies a mesh mat to the wooden floor. Once the filler has dried, the gravel floor is applied.

With a stone-carpeted terrace, the substrate is first primed and then waterproofed, onto which the surface is then filled.

Is a stone carpet suitable for pets?

Dogs, cats and co. feel much more comfortable on the structured surface of a gravel floor than on smooth floor coverings such as tiles or laminate, as they do not slip on the gravel structure. These surfaces can also be easily cleaned using a high-pressure cleaner with a brush attachment.

How is a stone carpet terrace laid?

The most important thing when creating stone-carpeted terraces and outdoor areas in general is to prepare the substrate. This ensures the durability of the finished floor.

On the one hand, this is because a primed subfloor provides significantly increased adhesion for the filled gravel. On the other hand, a sealing layer keeps rainwater away from the building structure, for example, which supports long-term durability.

Options for sealing building structures are

  • Sealing using an epoxy resin seal with sealing membrane
  • Sealing using a flex sealing slurry

In order to drain rainwater effectively, a stone carpet balcony is laid with a gradient of at least 1.5%.

Which binders are suitable for laying a stone carpet terrace?
We recommend Qubo® PU08 for a stone carpet terrace and for gravel floors in outdoor areas in general. This binder is a one-component polyurethane (1C PU) for laying gravel coatings on balconies, terraces, pool surrounds and outdoor steps.
Laying with polyurethane as a binder gives the gravel floor the high elasticity required for large temperature differences.
Qubo® PU08 is also absolutely UV-resistant and frost-proof.
Should a stone carpet terrace be fitted with a pore seal?

No, on stone carpet terraces, the gravel floor is always laid as an open system to ensure drainage capacity and thus the run-off of rainwater. This makes it 100% frost-proof and therefore ideal for pool surrounds and as a covering for balconies, entrance areas, outdoor steps and loggias.

How do you clean a stone-carpeted patio?
Stone-carpeted patios can be cleaned using a high-pressure cleaner with a brush system. Without a brush system, the dirt is pressed between the pebbles. This reduces the drainage capacity and makes it even more difficult to remove the dirt.
Is it possible to repair or mend a stone-carpeted patio?
Of course, installation professionals can seamlessly repair imperfections after structural changes. However, it must be remembered that color changes due to environmental influences and the natural aging process cannot be ruled out.
Is a stone carpet terrace waterproof?
A waterproof surface is not desired on stone-carpeted terraces. Water flows off within the stone structure and does not form puddles. The waterproofing of the structure is the water-bearing layer.
In addition, only an unsealed gravel floor is absolutely frost-proof.
Can a stone carpet be laid on stairs?
With marble and quartz gravel, old stairs can be easily renovated both indoors and outdoors. If you apply a gravel coating to your old stairs, you will get a new design without having to invest in a new staircase. Renovation is carried out without any chiseling or demolition work. Staircase renovation significantly reduces or even completely eliminates noise. Of course, stone carpeting is also ideal for new staircases and entrance areas.
Can stairs be renovated with non-slip stone carpet?

Yes. A staircase coated with stone carpet already has a slip resistance class of R10 after installation.

Special sealants can be used to increase the slip resistance class to R11 or R12.

How long does a staircase renovation with stone carpeting take?

Depending on the design of the staircase, the renovation takes 3-5 days. In special cases, installation is also possible within an even shorter time. For a more precise determination of the duration of your construction project , simply contact us at.

What is a natural stone carpet?

All our gravel floors use natural stones as the base material. This is why many people also refer to stone carpeting as natural stone carpeting.

The gravel is available natural and colored.
