Stone carpet bathroom & sauna

What requirements must a bathroom floor meet? Seamless stone carpet bathroom and WC

Due to the high humidity, a bathroom floor has to cope with a number of tasks. Above all, it should

  • be robust and waterproof and not swell up,
  • be non-slip and barefoot-friendly, i.e. comfortable and warm,
  • Prevent mold growth,
  • be hygienic, durable and easy to clean .

If possible, seek advice from a specialist company on the subject of bathroom stone carpeting for professional installation in wet areas. Correct sealing of all surfaces is particularly important in bathrooms and wet rooms. This is the only way to ensure lasting durability, a flawless appearance and insurance cover.

Plan your stone-carpeted bathroom now Inspiration for your stone-carpeted bathroom

Regardless of whether you are planning a new build, a conversion or a renovation, a whole host of questions arise at the start of any planning process and the desire to seek advice arises. A good place to get answers to your questions and inspiration for your floor and wall design are the Qubo® bases.

It doesn’t matter which style you choose – whether purist, modern, elegant, whether you prefer round or angular shapes – a stone bathroom carpet always cuts a fine figure. The wide range of colors includes classic marble tones. On the other hand, the Qubo® Colorquarz offers an almost unlimited selection of colors and combinations for the individual design of walls and floors.

The seamless flooring not only scores points visually. Because without small tiles and grout lines, the room looks much more luxurious. Overall, seamless stone carpets make bathrooms appear larger than tiled ones. This is why the design of the floor surface without joints is ideal for small rooms such as guest WCs.

The cleaning effort is less with seamless surfaces. This is because dirt often settles in the joints between the tiles, which then has to be laboriously removed. Joints are also very susceptible to mold growth.

A stone bathroom carpet also has the advantage that the floor covering is much more robust than conventional tiles. If a heavy object falls on a gravel floor, it is usually spared, whereas tiles are quickly damaged.

Waterproof coating in the bathroom Stone carpet bathroom - wellness experience for your feet

With its massage-like effect, the stone carpet is a real treat for your feet. This is why, in addition to being laid in the bathroom, it is also suitable as a durable, non-slip and waterproof floor covering for saunas, fitness and wellness areas. To make the bathroom stone carpet waterproof, a pore seal is used in conjunction with an epoxy resin seal (Qubo® EP, glossy). Alternatively, a semi-matt or anti-slip polyurethane sealer can be used.

If you opt for a seamless bathroom , it is important to seal all surfaces perfectly, especially in the shower area, so that they do not become damp. For this reason, we would like to point out that we do not recommend stone carpeting in the direct shower area! This can be explained as follows:

Due to its granular structure, even the sealed stone carpet material does not form a pore-free surface on the substrate. If, for any reason – such as leaking silicone seams – moisture gets between the surface and the building seal, white stains can form under the transparent pore seal, for example. These are located underneath the seal and cannot be wiped away or removed by drying, resulting in an unsightly appearance. For this reason, insurance companies do not classify stone carpets as suitable for wet rooms and accept no liability!

We therefore recommend coating showers with microcement , as this material does not create a water-bearing layer between the coating and the substrate, so there is no risk of under-moisture!

The ideal combination also with microcement & epoxy resin floor underfloor heating in the stone carpet bathroom ensures warm feet

Regardless of whether you are planning a new build, a conversion or a renovation, a whole host of questions arise at the start of any planning process and the desire to seek advice arises. A good place to get answers to your questions and inspiration for your floor and wall design are the Qubo® bases.

When asked in which room underfloor heating is particularly important, most people answer the bathroom. After a shower, stepping onto a comfortably warm floor with freshly warmed feet is pure wellness. When airing the room afterwards, a lot of the heat in the room is conducted outside as well as the moisture. The first thing that cools down here is the floor, as the cold outside air sinks downwards. Conventional radiators take a long time to heat it up again, as the warm heating air rises first.

With underfloor heating, the floor will remain warm even after a period of airing, especially if a coating with high heat absorption is used. Special mention should be made here of stone carpet , microcement and epoxy resin floors . All three systems have the necessary properties to make heating particularly efficient and responsive. The thin layer thickness ensures rapid heat transfer into the room, while the high heat capacity of quartz gravel or marble gravel, cement paste and epoxy resin keeps the floor pleasantly warm underfoot for a long time. As the coating systems are filled directly onto the heating loops, the heat flow is not hindered by air pockets, as is the case with laminate, for example.

Incidentally, underfloor heating can also be milled in at a later date when renovating. You can find all the information you need in the useful information section “ Milling in underfloor heating “.

Stone carpet bathroom in Schleswig-Holstein

To call this building project just a stone-carpeted bathroom is actually an understatement – this bathroom in Schleswig-Holstein relies on a whole range of different coating systems from Quarzkiesboden Zimmermann. The basis is a quartz floor made of natural-colored quartz gravel and Qubo® EP02, the laying epoxy resin for indoor use. For use in the bathroom, the quartz gravel floor was provided with a Qubo® pore seal. This protects it from water penetration and makes it easy to mop.

The great thing about quartz gravel is that the skirting boards can also be made from it. This ensures a harmonious overall look. The Qubo® wall coating PU-WA08 is used for this.

The washbasin consists of a real wood panel with a natural front edge and knotholes. The knotholes were first filled with Qubo® Cast Resin High. The entire surface was then given a protective layer of Qubo® Cast Resin Low. This ensures that the wood is optimally prepared for daily contact with water.

A back panel made of natural slate can be seen behind the washbasin. The slate slabs create a seamless surface made of real stone. The same material also makes the wall surfaces behind the toilet and urinal as well as the shower walls a real eye-catcher.

As a special design element, the washbasin features a bluestone washbasin that blends in perfectly with the natural look of the bathroom.

Non-binding Cost estimate

What does a stone carpet cost?

First and foremost, the area of application determines the pricing. However, the costs depend on many different factors, including

  • the type of binder required
  • from the primer

  • the choice of skirting boards, for example, if these are also made of gravel

  • from the labor costs of the professional installer

  • the size of the area to be laid

In outdoor areas, the costs are higher because the substrate needs to be sealed and the marble gravel needs to be laid with a UV-resistant binder.

Which binders are suitable for indoor installation?
For interior applications, we recommend Qubo® Epoxy Resin (Qubo® EP for short). The products in this range are two-component binders for laying gravel floors in interior areas in private and commercial environments.
Qubo® EPs offer the necessary durability to provide floors and treads on stairs with a long-lasting gravel coating. The material is transparent and allows the selected gravel colors to shine in their full glory.
The vertical binder Qubo® PU-WA08 is used for vertical surfaces such as risers and skirting boards.
What different types of stone carpet are there?

In most cases,
coloured quartz
or
marble gravel
is used for the production of stone carpets. However, there are considerable differences in quality here, for example in the proportion of dust in the material or in the types of marble used. Mica additives and various precious and semi-precious stones can be added, but this is another cost factor.

What grain sizes are available?

Colored quartz is available in the following grain sizes:

  • 1–2 mm

  • 2–3 mm

  • 3–4 mm

Marble gravel is available in the following grain sizes:

  • 1–4 mm

  • 4–8 mm

  • 8–15 mm

Of course, the choice of gravel grain size has an effect on the laying thickness of the gravel floor.

What material thickness is used to lay stone carpet?

The laying thickness of the floor depends on the gravel grain size and the area of application. Normal gravel with a grain size of 2 – 3 mm can be laid indoors with a thickness of 6 mm.

An installation thickness of 8 mm is used outdoors and on stairs indoors due to the load.

Finally, 10 mm of material is applied to external stairs.

Vertical surfaces such as risers, skirting boards and walls are always laid in 6 mm.

How does the grain size affect the costs?

The larger the grain size of the gravel, the higher the installation height of the floor covering. This means that more gravel and additional binder is required per m². The price increases accordingly.

Why is a primer required for stone carpets?

The primer forms the bonding bridge between the building structure and the gravel floor. The material can be applied to almost any substrate, for example tiles, wood, stone, concrete and metal. Different substrates require different preparation steps.

On tiles and metal, for example, a primer is required to give the smooth surface stability during installation.

On porous stone and absorbent screed, the appropriate primer must be used to prevent the binder from being absorbed, which is intended to ensure that the pebbles remain in place.

To coat wooden planks with a gravel floor, the movement of the planks against each other must first be stopped. To do this, the installer first applies a mesh mat to the wooden floor. Once the filler has dried, the gravel floor is applied.

Why should a stone carpet be provided with a pore sealer?

For reasons of hygiene, the stone carpet should be fitted with a pore seal, especially in kitchens and
bathrooms
. It prevents leaked, sticky liquids from penetrating the gravel floor. While it is difficult to remove liquids that have penetrated an open floor, the pore seal enables
effortless cleaning
by wet mopping.

Is a stone carpet suitable for pets?

Dogs
, cats and co. feel much more comfortable on the textured surface of a gravel floor than on smooth floor coverings such as tiles or laminate, as they do not slip on stone carpets. However, it is advisable to cover the floor with a pore seal to ensure an easily wipeable surface.

Can a stone carpet be laid outdoors?
Definitely, yes! A stone carpet on your
terrace
is the durable alternative to other floor coverings. The system creates a non-slip floor that is not only visually appealing, but also 100% frost-proof and UV-resistant. This means that our
Qubo® quartz gravel
can be used outdoors without any problems. Their special coating gives the quartz pebbles additional protection from the sun’s rays.
Our
marble gravel
, which is also suitable for outdoor use, comes from Italian quarries and is naturally lightfast.
What are the advantages of a stone carpet in outdoor areas?
  • High drainage capacity due to open-pored structure

  • Quick drying in sun and wind

  • Easy to clean and self-cleaning

  • 100% frostsicher

  • UV-stabil

  • Gentle, massage-like walking comfort when walking barefoot
How is the stone carpet laid outdoors?

The most important thing when laying gravel floors in outdoor areas is preparing the substrate. This ensures the durability of the finished floor.

On the one hand, this is because a primed subfloor provides significantly increased adhesion for the filled gravel. On the other hand, a sealing layer keeps rainwater away from the building structure, for example, which supports long-term durability.

Options for sealing building structures are

  • Sealing using an epoxy resin seal with sealing membrane
  • Sealing using a flex sealing slurry

In order to drain rainwater effectively, the floor covering is laid with a gradient of at least 1.5%.

Which binders are suitable for outdoor installation?
For outdoor areas, we recommend Qubo® PU08. This binder is a one-component polyurethane (1C PU) for laying stone carpets on balconies, terraces, pool surrounds and outdoor steps.
Laying with polyurethane as a binder gives the gravel floor the high elasticity required for large temperature differences.
Qubo® PU08 is also absolutely UV-resistant and frost-proof.
Should a pore seal be applied to an outdoor stone carpet?

No, in outdoor areas, the stone carpet is always laid as an open system to ensure drainage capacity and thus the drainage of rainwater. This makes them 100% frost-proof and therefore ideal as
pool surrounds
and as a covering for balconies, terraces, entrance areas, outdoor steps and loggias.

How do you clean a stone carpet indoors and outdoors?
Indoors, the gravel floor can simply be vacuumed or damp mopped. Heavier soiling can be removed with a wet vacuum cleaner or steam cleaner.
The exterior can be cleaned using a high-pressure cleaner with a brush system. Without a brush system, the dirt is pressed between the pebbles. This reduces the drainage capacity and makes it even more difficult to remove the dirt.
Further information on the subject of cleaning can be found in our section worth knowing.
Can a stone carpet be mended or repaired?
Of course, installation professionals can seamlessly repair imperfections after structural changes such as moving a wall. However, it is important to remember that changes in color due to environmental influences and the natural aging process cannot be ruled out.
Is a stone carpet waterproof?
The waterproofing of the building structure is the water-bearing layer. To make the interior stone carpet waterproof, we use a pore seal in combination with an epoxy resin sealant. Qubo® EP (glossy) can be used as an epoxy resin sealant.
Another option is a semi-matt or anti-slip polyurethane sealant.

We would like to point out that we do not recommend stone carpets in the direct shower area. The reasons for this can be found in the basic structure of the floor and the wet room. Just as the tile adhesive under a tile does not form a completely flat surface without air pockets, pores also remain underneath a sealed stone carpet.

If, after years, a silicone seam leaks and water from a fitting, for example, penetrates between the wall or floor covering and the seal of the building structure, the transparent pore seal reacts with the water and forms white stains. As these occur underneath the seal, they cannot be wiped away or removed by drying.

This is why insurance companies do not classify stone carpets as suitable for wet rooms and do not replace such coatings in the event of damage. We therefore recommend microcement coatings for showers. With these, there is no water-bearing layer between the floor covering and the substrate, so there is no risk of moisture penetration. Due to the many customization options for microcement, it can also be combined with stone carpeting. Just get in touch with us.

Can a stone carpet be laid on stairs?
With marble and quartz gravel, old
stairs
can be easily renovated both indoors and outdoors. If you apply a gravel coating to your old stairs, you will get a new design without having to invest in a new staircase. Renovation is carried out without any chiseling or demolition work. Staircase renovation significantly reduces or even completely eliminates noise. Of course, stone carpeting is also ideal for new staircases and entrance areas.
Can stairs be renovated with non-slip stone carpet?

Yes. A staircase coated with stone carpet already has a slip resistance class of R10 after installation.

Special sealants can be used to increase the slip resistance class to R11 or R12.

How long does a staircase renovation with stone carpeting take?

Depending on the design of the staircase, the renovation takes 3-5 days. In special cases, installation is also possible within an even shorter time. For a more precise determination of the duration of your construction project ,

What is a natural stone carpet?

All our gravel floors use natural stones as the base material. This is why many people also refer to stone carpeting as
natural stone carpeting
.

The gravel is available natural and colored.
